Gourmet Guided Walks in the Nelson Tasman Region
Southern Wilderness specialises in innovative day and multi-day Gourmet Guided Walks through the three National Parks of the Nelson Tasman region. The Heaphy Track in Kahurangi National Park, The Coastal Track in Abel Tasman National Parkand the Travers Sabine Circuit in Nelson Lakes National Park are the flagship multi-day walks in the region. Click through the links below to find out more about the walks that we offer in each park:
KAHURANGI NATIONAL PARK – HOME OF THE HEAPHY TRACK
In the Maori language, Kahurangi means ‘treasured possession’. The well-graded Heaphy Track crosses the park and is the longest of the Department of Conservation’s ‘Great Walks’. The Heaphy Track is certainly a trail to be treasured as it passes through some of the oldest rocks, most varied plants and rarest birds in New Zealand. Our 5 day Heaphy Gourmet Guided Walk allows you to walk the track at a comfortable pace with time for side trips and a relax at the huts along the way. Put it on your ‘must do’ list now! If you’re pressed for time or want to stride out the kilometres faster, we also offer a 4 day Heaphy Gourmet Guided Walk.
The Wangapeka Track provides a more challenging alternative east-west traverse through Kahurangi and is a stunning 5 day guided backcountry adventure that crosses two 1000m passes to link some of New Zealand’s finest remote river valleys.
NELSON LAKES NATIONAL PARK
Less than 1.5 hrs drive from Nelson, Nelson Lakes National Park is an unspoilt, largely undiscovered alpine wonderland. The Guided 5 day Travers Sabine Circuitprovides an ideal opportunity for walkers to experience the northernmost end of the majestic Southern Alps, following two glacial valleys, crossing an alpine pass and linking lakes Rotoiti and Rotoroa.
Our Angelus Alpine Experience is a great way to get a taste of life above bushline in Nelson Lakes. With a walk along the spectactular Robert Ridge and two nights in the suprememly located new DoC hut at Lake Angelus, this 3 day guided circuit is a highlight for anyone visiting the park.
