Itinerary

Day One Marahau to Anchorage (12.4 km approx. 4 hours)

We set of across the causeway and pass through open country to Tinline Bay then onto Coquille Bay This is one of many picturesque sandy beaches to be encountered on this trip. We have plenty of time to cover today’s distance and so there’ll be ample opportunities for photographs and stops at the beaches along the way. We’ll pass Apple Tree and Stilwell bays with a lunch break en route to take in views of the offshore Adele Island. Then it’s up over the low forested saddle to reach the sheltered bay at Anchorage, our hut for the night.

Day Two Anchorage to Bark Bay (12.1km approx. 4 hours)

We continue our walk on one of the track’s most beautiful sections. There are some great side trips off the main track in the Anchorage and Torrent Bay area, including an excursion up to Cleopatra’s Pool – a boulder-lined swimming hole in the depths of some pristine native bush. Your guide will let you know what options are available depending on weather, time and tide constraints. For the rest of the day you will walk northward towards Onetahuti Bay, at first heading inland over a saddle between two bush-clad valleys, then heading down to the magical Falls River, which we cross on a 47m suspension bridge. Another short climb and descent to cross South Head takes us into Bark Bay.

Day Three Bark Bay to Awaroa (10km approx. 3.5 hours)

Today is the last of our shorter walks. After crossing the Bark Bay estuary, or using the all tide track around the edge, we climb the steep saddle through manuka stands before returning to the coast at Tonga Quarry. From here its a short walk to Onetahuti Bay for lunch. The conservation land is not just limited to the National Park boundary landward of the high tide line, as this stretch of water, The Tonga Island Marine Reserve, is also protected. No fishing is allowed in the reserve and all plant and animal life is included. We have another climb this time over Tonga Saddle before arriving at our night’s accommodation at the Awaroa DOC hut.

Water taxis are unable to take our bags north of Bark Bay so you will need to carry your overnight bags from here on.

Day Four Awaroa to Whariwharangi Bay via Sepperation Point (18km approx. 6hrs)

Once across the Awaroa inlet we cross a low saddle before dropping down to Waiharakeke Bay before re-entering the forest and Emerging at Goat Bay. We can climb to a lookout above Skinner Point before descending to Totaranui. This is the northern access point of the Coastal track for water taxis. This is a popular destination in its own right with a busy campsite and DoC visitor centre. Here we collect our packs for the final leg of the track. After lunch we wind our way through the lush forest to Anapai Bay. From here to Mutton Cove the scenery alternates between sandy beaches and rocky headlands of regenerating Kanuka. We can take a detour to Separation point where the Fur seals breed before arriving at Whariwharangi hut for the evening.

Day Five Whariwharangi Bay to Wainui Bay & Home (5.5km approx. 2 hours)

To the end – following the stream we climb out of the bay to a saddle overlooking Wainui inlet. After winding our way down to the shore we follow the estuary edge to the car park and the end of the track. We celebrate completing one of New Zealand’s nine great walks with lunch in Takaka before driving back through the beautiful Golden Bay area, over the Takaka hill to Nelson.

Includes four night’s hut accommodation in Department of Conservation huts, all meals, guiding services, door to door transport to/from Nelson accommodation.

NOTE: The accommodation on the track is in Department of Conservation huts – these are basic, but comfortable and must be shared with other walkers. Guests carry their own pack containing personal clothing and sleeping bag. Guides carry all food, cooking utensils and safety equipment.

Price: $1995 per person
