About Us

Originally established in 1982, Southern Wilderness has like many older companies evolved with the people involved in it to become what it is today. Under the current ownership of Ryan Kelly, Safety, Quality, Professionalism and Fun are the key words which make up the vision of Southern Wilderness. Ryan has spent many years in the outdoor and tourism industry, including two years as head guide on the Routeburn Track. He understands that small personal groups are the key to lasting memories. That's why with Southern Wilderness on the Heaphy Track there is a ratio of one guide to four guests. The team Erin, Ben, Brian, and Di are all passionate friendly people, with a wealth of knowledge and life experience. They each know what it takes to orchestrate a truly unique journey.

Southern Wilderness is committed to being a world class guiding company.

What does this mean? We want to be the best that we can personally be. We simply want to become positively involved in life and we don't want to waste time with mediocrity. We continually ask ourselves the question, are we involved? Are we having a positive impact within the community, our environment, in each other's lives, and in our guest's journey? Is this a company we would happily open for the world to see our actions, and the answer is yes.

We believe in being gentle with the environment we play in. Reducing, reusing and recycling wherever possible we believe that we have a positive impact on others around us.

We have a team of very passionate people, who love the outdoors, but more importantly, who love to share the outdoors with our guests.

So why not come and try hiking the Southern Wilderness way, let us look after you in our playground.
