Mt Angelus Alpine Experience

Our three day Angelus Alpine Adventure is a great introduction to the splendour of the Southern Alps. A stunning traverse along the barren Mt Robert Ridgeline leads you to the magical Angelus Basin with its tarns and lofty peaks. Here you’ll spend a pack-free day exploring, before heading back down to Lake Rotoiti on the final day, into the enchanted beech forest that covers a large part of Nelson Lakes National Park.

The Angelus hike is designed for guests who have a moderate to good level of fitness, and have experienced long day walks before. More challenging than the Heaphy Track and Abel Tasman Coastal Track, the Track to Mt Angelus hut and down the cascades in not on well formed track, you will be walking on exposed rock and scree for sections of the day.

This is a challenging but highly rewarding hike, A unique opportunity to experience a good taste of the Southern Alps in a relatively short space of time, and in comfort, with only a lightweight pack required!

Itinerary

Day1 – Up the ridge line

We travel by vehicle from your accommodation in Nelson to the Mt Robert carpark situated above Lake Rotoiti, Nelson Lakes. From here we will begin our Ascent up the pinchgut track, after 1.5 hours we will arrive at relax shelter where we will be having our lunch stop for the day. From here we continue along the Mt Robert ridgeline to Lake Angelus and the Lake Angelus Hut (elevation 1600m). We stay this and the following night at the Angelus Hut. (the track between relax shelter and Angelus hut follows a poled route which at times covers rocky and exposed terrain, completely safe but can be unnerving for some)

Day 2 – Exploring The Area

Today we explore either the Angelus Basin, Mt Angelus or Mt Cedric, depending on weather and group interest. Since we return to the same hut there is no need to carry more than a light day pack, making for an enjoyable day in the alpine air.

Day 3 – Down the Cascades

The third day consists of walking down the Hukere Stream on the Cascade track towards the valley floor and into the Travers Valley, this is a steep but absolutely stunning section of the walk, massive boulders and streams tumbling down the mountains!! When we hit the bottom of the valley we follow the track to Coldwater Hut and before following Lake Rotoiti back to St Arnaud township. From here we transfer back to Nelson, in time for connecting flights, or an opportunity to explore Nelson further.

Includes two night’s hut accommodation in Department of Conservation huts, all meals, guiding services, door to door transport to/from Nelson accommodation.

NOTE: The accommodation on the track is in Department of Conservation huts – these are basic, but comfortable and must be shared with other walkers. Guests carry their own pack containing personal clothing and sleeping bag. Guides carry all food, cooking utensils and safety equipment.

Price: $1995 per person
