We are currently hiring guides for the season which runs from mid October 2024 to late April 2025. There are a range of trip dates throughout the summer.
Our Guides carry provisions, prepare meals and ensure our customers are enjoying themselves in NZ’s beautiful backcountry.
We are locally owned and have been operating in the Nelson / Tasman region since 2006. Our head office is in Nelson, where all our trips start from.
We offer high end hiking experiences with gourmet food and friendly, knowledgeable guides on the Heaphy Track, Abel Tasman National Park, Nelson Lakes District and the Old Ghost Road.
We enjoy every minute of our work day, and we only employ people who have a similar mentality.
We offer full training, competitive pay rates and supply food and accommodation during trips.

Essential
- Love of the outdoors
- Hiking experience
- An advanced level of fitness as this role involves carrying a 25-30kg pack
- Current First Aid Certificate or ability to gain this prior to start date
- New Zealand Drivers Licence, especially P endorsement or ability to gain this prior to start date
- Excellent interpersonal skills
Desirable
- Guiding experience
- Guiding qualification
- Cooking/ meal preparation experience
- Knowledge of regional history and the local flora and fauna
- Current Food Safety Certificate
Southern Wilderness is committed to providing a safe workplace. Successful applicants will need to pass a pre employment physical which may include drug testing.
We are also requiring drivers to transport us to and from Nelson, this role would suit somebody already with casual employment or a retiree looking for a little extra income and some great days driving groups to and from the start of the tracks.
